Kobler has essentially given the green light to the Iraqis to move in and dislodge the Ashraf residents that are holding out in the hope of more humane treatment. In so doing, he brings shame upon both the UN institution and the US government. It was, after all, the US Army that promised to protect the Ashraf residents when Iraq was liberated from Saddam Hussein's regime. The US Government subsequently promised to guarantee the Iraqi pledge to ensure transferring residents would be humanely treated when they arrived at Camp Liberty. Yet Washington now stands by while its so-called Iraqi allies conduct a programme of extreme harassment which could end in more deaths?
The inhuman treatment being meted out to the residents of Liberty and Ashraf now transcends the US Government, and their pli
ght has become an international cause célèbre. Tomorrow, (August 4th), at the initiative of Arabic-Islamic Committee in Defense of Ashraf Residents, prominent political figures, parliamentarians, and human rights activists from a dozen Islamic countries will come to Paris to warn the international community of the impending tragedy. Chaired by Sid Ahmed Ghozali, the former Prime Minister of Algeria, men and women from Egypt, Iraq, Tunisia, Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, Kuwait, Palestine, Bahrain, and Yemen will tell of their fears regarding the looming humanitarian catastrophe and the need for an immediate response from the US Government and the UN.
